Blade Runner 2049
★★★★★
Following the rebellion of Replicants a new type has been invented that will serve and not rebel, K (Ryan Gosling) is one of this new breed and works for the LAPD as a ‘Blade Runner’. A Blade Runner is a detective thats operates as more of an Assassin tracking down replicants like the old Nexus 8 models and expiring them. After a routine job where he completes his mission to expire the Nexus 8 model hiding on a protein farm, K finds a box of bones that carry an earth shattering secret. He is then tasked with a new mission one to track down a new prey.
It is 30 years since the original Blade Runner movie but this new instalment is set in very much the same world, though a lot has changed. Earth has become reliant on replicant run protein farms, as its Eco system has collapsed. The Tyrell Corporation that created the original replicants, known as ‘skin jobs’, is long since bankrupt, taken over by the Wallace Corporation. Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) and his hench-woman (Sylvia Hoeks) at first appearing to help K, for their own means, take a nasty turn when they think he has out lived his usefulness and try to expire him.
K lives an isolated life his only real companion is a holographic woman who he loves and loves him back. He takes her with him when his mission takes an unexpected turn and becomes an escape mission. His fight for survival is almost human like and adds to the drama of finding out the secrets he unravels along the way. Though there are a few action scenes this is not an action movie, it moves slowly and methodically much like K himself.
No one however can be more isolated the Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who has been in hiding for many years, leave it to K to track him down and blow his perfectly created world to pieces. This appearance of the original Blade Runner adds to the movies brilliance and he brings back memories of the original that we all love and adore.
Probably the best part of this movie is that, like many a movie you can see the twist coming and are sure you know what is happening only to be proved wrong when more twists in the plot line hit you hard! Gosling plays K wonderfully and Jared Leto is very much suited to the role of insane, power hungry, monologuing bad guy that he plays. It’s a definite must see for everyone old enough to.
